FTTH-Roadshow shows future-oriented solutions

22.10.19 - The progressing digitalisation with increasing data volumes requires appropriate capacities and infrastructures. How the expansion of fibre-optic networks from the distributor to the end customer can be realised quickly and cost saving with the aid of smart solutions, is the topic of the event series “Fibre-optic expansion freshly thought”. In July 2019 the “FTTH-Roadshow” was stationed at TRACTO-TECHNIK in Lennestadt, to inform representatives of network operators, installation companies and the open public about the current trends and possibilities.

Innovative complete solutions „Made in Germany“

A nationwide broadband infrastructure is currently right at the top of the political agenda of the federal government, federal states and communes. Everywhere a quicker expansion of the necessary fibre-optic network is desired, but an accelerated expansion can only be achieved, with the application of modern, future-oriented installation methods and network components. Not only for the installation, also for house connections and distribution technologies (PoP/APL), the technical development is constantly taking great steps forward. The main aim of the FTTH Roadshow, which TRACTO-TECHNIK are performing with the co-operation partners DIAMOND, Hauff-Technik, ZweiComm-Hauff and KATIMEX, is to show the status of the technology from both the installation and connection side.

The programme for the event series offers an enlightening cross-section of solutions, developed by these innovative German manufacturers for the pipe installation to the end user, the insertion of optical waveguides into the pipe, the supply to the property and distribution outside and inside the buildings.

Sustainable trenchless method for network expansions and the last mile

Up to 80 percent of the investment costs for pipeline dependant broadband expansions with fibre-optic cables are accounted towards civil engineering. These costs can be reduced immensely when applying innovative trenchless technologies. Furthermore, valuable surfaces are preserved, construction times much shorter, than with the conventional construction method. Exactly how the installation of protection pipes and cables for the distribution and the so-called last mile can be carried out, without disrupting valuable surfaces, is shown by TRACTO-TECHNIK under the title “Trenchless instead of open-trench”.

For the network expansion (Backbone and City networks) and production of single or serial house connections (FTTH) there are various NODIG systems at your disposal, depending on the general conditions, which can be applied in almost all soil classifications, even in rocks. The trenchless construction method is not only suitable for rural areas, but also for urban districts and guarantees, due to sufficient installation depths, a lasting supply reliability.
Non-steerable bore units, such as the GRUNDOMAT soil-displacement hammer are applied for crossing traffic routes with up to 25 m lengths and for the pipe installation up to the connection area, along a straight bore path.
The steerable horizontal flushing drilling technology is especially suitable for network expansions, as more flexibly planned bore paths can be implemented. With the GRUNDODRILL steerable bore rigs, pipelines can be installed from the surface over longer distances up to 500 m. The Mini-steerable bore rig, Type GRUNDOPIT, which is started in a minimal sized, square or circular starting pit (Keyhole), is suitable for installation lengths up to 100 m and for the production of house connections. Just like the soil displacement hammer, these compact bore rigs can install house connections up to a pit in front of the building (FTTH), or directly into the cellar (FTTB), or in each case in the opposite direction.
TRACTO-TECHNIK has developed an extremely compact Mini-Bore-Rig, especially for trenchless house connections directly from the footpath, where the public fibre-optic infrastructure in Germany runs beneath. The prototype of this GRUNDOPIT PS40 fits into extremely small pits, with a width of 1 metre, equivalent to the width of the footpath. From there the fibre-optic cable can be installed in the mandatory installation depth of at least 60 cm directly to the building, or directly to the connection room inside the building.

FTTG – The fibre-optic connection concept of the future

As a leading European manufacturer of cable-, pipe- and service line entries, the company Hauff-Technik has developed individual solutions, e.g. special building entrances for the trenchless house connection. Now the long-standing co-operative partner of TRACTO-TECHNIK has developed a future-oriented solution, which allows the transfer of the fibre-optic cable from the premises border (FttG to the Ground) and distinctly simpler and faster FTTH-completion of new development areas.
The planning and scheduling of a fibre-optic house connection is a lengthy process for all participants. In order to determine the bore path, the timing of the pipe installation, cable entry and launching, very often up to 5 meetings with the property owners have to be negotiated. Despite this, only about 30 – 40 % of the planned FTTH connections are directly realised and 60 – 70 % are installed at a later stage. Apart from the high organisational expenditure, this also increases the total costs per house connection immensely. To provide a remedy for this, Hauff-Technik has developed the “G-Box”.
The G-Box is a modified road cap made of a fibre-optic strengthened plastic, which is placed as a fixed transfer point of the fibre-optic cable at the border between premises and footpath, acting as a mini-manhole in the ground. It serves as a feeding point for micro-pipes and as a depot for the fibre-optic cable, which can be blown into the pipes, either directly afterwards, or at a later stage. The G-Box is a forward thinking and cost saving solution for single and especially serial FTTH connections in existing building areas and in new development areas, as the cable installation in accordance with the connection and building progress for all properties can be completed in one blowing-in process. With an integrated APL, the G-Box can also act as transfer point on the property border, providing the interface between the network operator and the house connection.

Systematic network expansion with turnkey POP stations

The Synergy Enterprise ZweiCom-Hauff bundles the competences for high quality FTTH components and safe sealing systems. Among the fully developed solutions for efficient fibre-optic networks are turnkey main distributors, known as POP-stations (POP Point of Presence) in the specialist jargon.
Main distributors are the starting point for every fibre-optic network and are specially erected for each new network. The POP stations from ZweiCom-Hauff are equipped in accordance with the individual customer request and network components, pre-assembled and delivered ready to connect. This time- and cost saving complete solution consists of main distributors for 1000 up to 3000 residential units and Mini-POP stations for smaller residential units. The high quality, powerful components guarantee the network operator additionally a quicker amortisation, due to a trouble-free application, for years to come.

How the optical waveguide enters the pipe lightning fast

The pulling-in or blowing-in of all types of building cables occurs subsequently inside the designated empty pipes.
If these are already occupied, then the operator has a time consuming waiting game threading the fibre-optic cable through the remaining space inside the pipe. With the intelligent solutions from the renowned manufacturer KATIMEX, cables can be pulled in, even in the most difficult conditions.
The new pull-in system KATI® BLITZ Mini makes this possible, which was specifically designed for the installation of filigreed fibre-optic cables in very tight or occupied empty pipes. The compact pulling-in device has a fibre-optic profile of only 1,2 mm diameter and a flexible mini-guide sonde, which can drive through the tightest points and bends without any problems whatsoever. This makes the subsequent pulling in of fibre-optic cables into buildings much easier. With an additional Micro-guiding sonde, the KATI® BLITZ Mini, cable pulling through Microducts (Speedpipes) can also be easily achieved. The system enables bending radii from up to 15mm and is available in the lengths 15m, 25m and 35m.
With the pulling-in system Kati® Blitz Compact 2.0, a storage drum inside a solid plastic housing, which quickly reels a guiding band, made of glass-fibre in and out without becoming knotted, Katimex has been the market leader for many years. Special stopper sleeves at the beginning and end of the band reduce the danger of band breakage and allows small bending radii up to 30 mm inside empty pipe systems of buildings. The system has proven itself for a long time in daily applications for electrical fitters all over Europe and with telecommunication engineers of the German Telekom.
An expansion of the Kati® Blitz Compact 2.0 is offered with the Kati® Blitz Locator 2.0, which not only allows the installer to pull in cables, but to also detect precisely the pipe course and any blockages with the help of customary cable detection devices.

Plug & Play FTTH-Installation inside buildings

DIAMOND GmbH is among the leading manufacturers of innovative fibre-optic solutions. The products, which are available in standard versions and also customer-oriented variations, are applied in numerous branches, such as telecommunication, multimedia and industrial automation. An especially smart solution for the simple installation of fibre-optic cables from the house transfer point (HÜP) to the network sockets in the living area is the DiaLink FTTH System.
The DiaLink FTTH System consists of an extremely robust fibre-optic cable, the DiaLink plug with hybrid centre-piece and Keystone-Adapter for the version without surface box. The DiaLink plug is perfectly suited for tight space conditions and thanks to the metal feed cap, withstands loads up to 300 N during the pulling-in process. Together with the cable, it is pulled into the empty pipe and later connected to the network socket via the centrepiece and the adapter.
